The Craft Group meet on the 3rd Friday of the month, 2 pm at the Thatcham Baptist Church. There are no meetings in August and December. We share our enthusiasm for all craft. The programme is suggested by the members and we share our experience and skills.
We are a very friendly group, happy to share knowledge and help each other to improve our crafting.

In May we made pincushions that look like little hats, Rosemary, one of our members, showed us how to make them. In the central picture you can also see some of the finished baskets that we completed at home after last month's meeting. We had fun wearing the little hats for the photo on the left!

In April we were making baskets out of greetings cards. It was quite an involved process, lots of cutting out of card shapes and then making holes in the pieces to be able to sew round them and eventually sew them into the basket shape. No-one got their baskets finished so we took them home to complete and will bring them back next time so we can see them all finished.

In February we made covers our of felt that could be used to go around an empty tin can to be used as a vase or pencil pot. The cover was made from five shaped pieces of felt so that there was an attractive flared top to the cover, sewn together with an overstitch or blanket stitch. Everyone chose different ways to decorate their covers using lace, buttons, sequins and embroidery.

In January we made coasters out of contrasting fabrics with wadding inside to make them heat resistant. The material was cut into hexagons, one larger than the other so it could be folded round and stitched in place to make a border.

In November we had a lovely time making gnomes from Scandinavian patterned socks. The socks were cut in half, the bottom half had weighted beads put in and then stuffing before being gathered to close. Beads for the noses and hair were then attached. The top of the socks were gathered to close and then used as hats. We all thought they looked cute!

In October we had a table at our Thatcham u3a Open Afternoon showing things we have made during the year. Julie is talking to Thatcham Mayor Petra Pemberton.

At our September meeting we turned empty jam jars into tealight holders using lace and ribbons. The tealights we used are battery operated and give a friendly glow as they shine through the lace. there won't be a meeting in October as we will be taking part in our Thatcham u3a Open Afternoon at the Catholic Church Hall as part of the Thatcham Festival.
At our March meeting we made Prosperity Hens. These hens originated in India where if you owned hens it was a symbol of your wealth. The fabric hens were then made to attract prosperity to your home, they are usually displayed by windows or doors to attract the prosperity in - here's hoping they work!

At our February meeting one of our members, Ann, showed us how to make fabric covers for small packs of tissues. We were all very pleased with the results. These covers are especially useful if you are out somewhere like the theatre or cinema and you don't want your tissue packet to rustle as you get a tissue out.
Thanks very much to Ann for her idea and guidance to us as we made them.

At our November meeting some of us made Christmas stocking felt tree decorations suitable to hold a small gift. Other members worked on their own projects.
There will not be a meeting in December so we look forward to continuing our crafts in the new year.
